We were honored when one of our keynote speakers wanted to go birding with us for the day. He mentioned that he was trying to recreate his life list in e-Bird, and thus fill in the gaps that weren’t now recorded in his personal electronic database. He looked up his “needs list” for Dane Co., WI, but also mentioned that he and his wife would love to see a red-headed woodpecker, so we went for that first. My favorite sighting was at Schoenberg’s marsh, when Paul spotted a black-billed cuckoo in flight. It’s the best and longest look I’ve ever had at one; I’ve never seen one in a prolonged flight like that. It flew from the wood edge across a small patch of prairie to a small tree just off the road. We succeeded with red-headed woodpecker at the small oak savanna at the other parking area for Schoenberg’s marsh!
